On November 5, 2021, Marvel's highly anticipated Phase 4 film Eternals was released and it's safe to say that the film hasn't been received so well in the public eye. As of right now Rotten Tomatoes has given this film a 47% on the Tomatometer! A 47%! Now let's be honest, the film wasn't the BEST film Marvel has made, but it certainly wasn't the WORST either (I think Thor: The Dark World takes the crown on that one). However, in my opinion, I thought Eternals was...well...good.
So, here’s what I think….
Honestly, there's a LOT going on in this film. A love triangle that most would call "toxic", a beloved anti-hero that has his own cult, and a villain that just didn’t matter….just to name a few. However, in the midst of all that movie within the movie, I still thought it was a pretty solid film! The plot wasn’t terrible, the cinematography was BEAUTIFUL, and I left the movie wanting to see more from our beloved Eternals. Isn’t this what Marvel films are supposed to do?

Now listen, everybody wanted to see how this movie was going to set up the MCU going forward and move the needle, but to be real I don’t think it does. Which is OK! This film wasn’t meant to set up the future and that’s exactly how it should be received. You guys remember that period when Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: First Avenger came out? Those movies weren’t really received well, and nobody knew what the MCU was building towards. I believe we’re in that same phase again. Right now a lot of projects are coming out and we’re still left wondering what exactly Marvel is trying to do. So right now, us fans have to be patient and let them work their magic.
Remember at the end of the day, this film is an origin story and the MCU must set up these characters BEFORE we get the good stuff again. The quicker you realize that the quicker you’ll realize that YES…Eternals was GOOD!
...but that's just what I think.
